Historical Perspective

SPCI house in Delhi is the national centre and secretariat of the Salesian ProvincialConference of South Asia. It is a point of reference for all Salesian works in India and South Asia. The Provincials' Conference is a structure for reflection, sharing and coordination among the Salesian Provinces in the region. The Centre was started in January 1997, but the house was canonically erected on 4 June 2003. The Centre houses the South Asia Regional offices of the following activities:

a.  The Secretariat of the Provincial Conference of South Asia.
b.  The office of the Don Bosco Youth Animation (DBYA) – South Asia;
c.   All India Don Bosco Education Society (AIDBES);
d.  The South Asia Regional Office of the Salesian Family;
e.  The South Asia Regional Office of the Association of Salesian Cooperators;
f.   The South Asia Regional Office of the Don Bosco Alumni;
g.  Offices of the Don Bosco National Forum for the Young at Risk.
h.  Office of the Don Bosco Tech India
i.    Salesian Procure (BoscoNet) of South Asia.

Being a common venture of all the Salesian provinces of the region of South Asia, the members of this house come from various Provinces of the region. The members of this community serve the region of South Asia through their animation and coordination work and their publications.

Provincial Speaks

The Province of Good Shepherd, New Delhi, has completed just 11 years. Our strength is 14 regular houses and 10 presences with 160 confreres. The geographical area under our care is very vast : 12 states and one Union Territory, where the youth in significant numbers are illiterate and poor, and the total Catholic population is a mere 0.4% that is 2 million.

We are aware that, with our present limited human and material resources, we may not be able to reach out to big numbers, but, as mother Teresa would say, we believe that, though we are but a drop in the ocean, still, if that drop is not there, the ocean is not full. We do wish to make a difference where we are present by being ‘Salt and Light’. We interpret the location of the Provincial House in the capital of the nation as a God-given exposure demanding great vocational responsibility. We feel indeed like the biblical ‘city on the mountain tip’ called to bear witness to Don Bosco and his spirit in an authentic way.
