INCREDIBLE LARREA

``He defies age and scorns senility. He puts to shame any youth by his activism and enthusiasm``. We are speaking of Fr. Juan Larrea, one of the remaining Spanish missionaries in the province of Guwahati. Fr. Larrea was born in 1921 just one year before the arrival of the Salesians to Assam. He had a turbulent youth on account of the Spanish Civil War. He left home at an early age to join the seminary. As a cleric he had to run from pillar to post in order to escape imprisonment and to pursue his dream of priesthood. He was separated from his loved ones for many years. Finally, in 1948 as a student of theology he was sent to Assam. Thus he reached India on the very first year of its independence. He came to Sacred Heart College, Mawlai to complete his theology and on 3rd September of the same year, he was ordained a priest by Bishop Stephen Ferrando. He worked as the Catechist in Sonada for a few years and then he came back to Assam and became the first Catholic missionary to work among the Lotha Nagas. From his headquarters in Golaghat he made effective contacts with the Lothas and was instrumental in bringing many to the Church. Even today he could still speak the Lotha language. He has a proverbial affection for the Lothas and would go crazy on seeing anyone of them.
Since 1978 Fr. Larrea has been a steady inmate of Pastoral Centre, Shillong. He has seen many confreres come and go out of this house. He is as ancient as the villa where he resides now. Fr. Larrea knows every corner of the house and every detail of the history of the place. Fr. Larrea`s name will go down in history as a die-hard lover of the Word of God. His four-volume Word of God translated into many languages, have immortalized his name. Besides this, his other catechetical works are very commendable. His passion for evangelization and catechesis is exhibited in his pastoral enthusiasm which seems to grow more with age. Age is no barrier for him. At the age of 89 he still drives a jeep and goes for his pastoral ministry. He has a great weakness for the poor and sick people. He makes a daily visit to the Nazareth Hospital in search of the sick and he willingly foots the hospital bills of the poor people who came to him. He has a strong will to live and be sure he is going to hit his century and even go beyond it. God bless this great missionary.
