DON BOSCO YOUTH CENTRE, HATIA

DON BOSCO YOUTH CENTRE, HATIA

Archdiocese of Ranchi
St. John Bosco – 1975

Historical Perspective

The house began in 1975 with an Apostolic School and a Technical School which was later shifted to Kokar. At present, there is a Parish with 3 sub-centres for Mass and 1 sub-station with a School and a Hostel. There is also the Don Bosco High School in Hindi Medium. The hosue was canonically erected on 15 October 1975.

Don Bosco, Hatia, started in 1975, is the oldest Salesian house in Chotanagpur. Fr. Guido Coloussi, of happy memories, is the pioneer of this institution and of Salesian presence in Chotanagpur region. In the course of time Don Bosco, Hatia has grown up into a great complex with three distinct but inter-dependant activities: the Apostolic School, Parish, and the Hindi medium High School.

Don Bosco Hatia celebrated the Silver Jubilee of its existence in 2000. It was a moment of celebration for the whole province, as the house of Hatia has given many Salesians to our province as well as to Kolkata province during the 25 years of its existence.

Provincial Speaks

The Province of Good Shepherd, New Delhi, has completed just 11 years. Our strength is 14 regular houses and 10 presences with 160 confreres. The geographical area under our care is very vast : 12 states and one Union Territory, where the youth in significant numbers are illiterate and poor, and the total Catholic population is a mere 0.4% that is 2 million.

We are aware that, with our present limited human and material resources, we may not be able to reach out to big numbers, but, as mother Teresa would say, we believe that, though we are but a drop in the ocean, still, if that drop is not there, the ocean is not full. We do wish to make a difference where we are present by being ‘Salt and Light’. We interpret the location of the Provincial House in the capital of the nation as a God-given exposure demanding great vocational responsibility. We feel indeed like the biblical ‘city on the mountain tip’ called to bear witness to Don Bosco and his spirit in an authentic way.
