DON BOSCO, KOKAR
Archdiocese of Ranchi
1985 – St. John Bosco
Historical Perspective
Don Bosco Complex, Kokar, had its humble beginning in the Technical School started at Hatia in 1981 and later shifted to Kokar to its present site in 1985. The house was canonically erected on 21 July 1992.
An imposing, functional three storey building was added to the existing ITC building to house the new Vocational Training Centre with the generous help of Comide. It was constructed under the painstaking care of Br. Tom, Frs. Henry and Charles Lobo. It was blessed on 10th August, 2002. The Centre offers short courses in Computer, Spoken English, Typing, Knitting and Tailoring, besides the 1 Year Office Management Course and 9 months’ Diploma Course in Computer Application and Accountancy. It gives facilities to the students of the neighbourhood for evening study. Its library is open to the college students of the locality. Efforts are also afoot to add Draughtsman’s and Electrician’s trades to the existing trades (Fitter, Turner, Machinist and Welder) offered by ITC.
The English Medium School started with 13 students and 2 teachers in the parish hall on 15th June, 1998. This school was started in memory of Rev. Fr. Guido Colussi, the founder of Don Bosco, Kokar. It was his dream to have an English medium school in this place. To develop the school, a beautiful three-storey building with 24 classrooms was constructed under the care of Frs. Diamond Brian and Henry Kumrawat. It was blessed and inaugurated on 23rd September 1999. Today, a new building has been added with labs and library and it has been recognized for class 10 ICSE.
The Hindi Medium School in Garigaon has now 700 students with 17 staff members. The “Disciples” of Fr. Joe D’Souza has helped in the running of the school for some years.
The parish which was entrusted to the Salesians. The Parish too has grown much and is ready for division. The Salesian Cooperators’ unit was started in 2000. Today the unit has 28 members of whom 14 have made their promises. It is actively involved in all parish activities. The compulsory Sunday Catechism classes with a regular attendance of 500 catholic students, organized by the cooperators under the guidance of the Parish Priest, have inspired many parishes to begin the same. The youth group with about 80 members is very much alive under the animation of Rector. A number of orientation and cultural programmes are conducted for and by them throughout the year. Fr. Naikam took initiatives in organizing the rickshaw pullers of Ranchi city and in caring for the children of leprosy patients were very much appreciated both in the civil and ecclesiastical circles. He had also taken initiatives in the area of Hindi publications. For the Great Jubilee year he succeeded to print and circulate a popular “Life of Jesus”.
