BOSCO INSTITUTE OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT

(BIRD) KAULI

Diocese of Shimla- Chandigarh 1993
Historical Perspective

The house of Kauli began in response to Rt. Rev. Bishop Gilbert Rego’s invitation to begin a Technical School. Salesian presence started in 1993 with the hostel at Rajpura. The diocese donated part of the land for the house. In 1994 the property of Bakeman’s was bought. In 1995, work began for an Agro-oriented Technical Institute. The new building complex was inaugurated on 24th October 2001. The house was canonically erected on 4 June 2003.

Fr. Marangattikala Joy, (M. M.) as the pioneer had done the feasibility study for the project. He bravely put up with a lot of hardships and privations to get this institute started and fathered it to its present stage. Frs. James Jainiwas, James Pazhayampallil, Edward Dang, Varkey Padmattumel and several other young Salesians shared with Fr. Joy in this arduous task. SCJM sisters assist the Salesians in the apostolate.

In May 1998, work began on the new building for the Technical Institute. The foundation stone for the same was blessed on 8th September, 1998.

The new building complex was inaugurated on 24th October 2001 by his Excellency, Guy Trouveroy, the Ambassador of Belgium. It was blessed by Bishop Gerald John Mathias in the presence of Fr. Provincial, Fr. K. A. Joseph and many well-wishers.

Development works

For this purpose, the institute is very much involved in the nearby villages with developmental programmes. In collaboration with National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the institute organizes Self Help Groups (SHG’s) and Rural Entrepreneurship programmes. In collaboration with State Bank of Patiala, the institute has organized agro-technical camps in the villages. The Centre also organizes Farmers’ clubs, Literacy programmes and remedial classes in the villages. In 1999, some more farm trades like bee keeping, pig rearing and fishery were started. Immediately after the inauguration of the province, in January 1997, the buildings for the farm trades were inaugurated. At present the institute offers 15 agro and technical non-formal training trades.

Provincial Speaks

The Province of Good Shepherd, New Delhi, has completed just 11 years. Our strength is 14 regular houses and 10 presences with 160 confreres. The geographical area under our care is very vast : 12 states and one Union Territory, where the youth in significant numbers are illiterate and poor, and the total Catholic population is a mere 0.4% that is 2 million.

We are aware that, with our present limited human and material resources, we may not be able to reach out to big numbers, but, as mother Teresa would say, we believe that, though we are but a drop in the ocean, still, if that drop is not there, the ocean is not full. We do wish to make a difference where we are present by being ‘Salt and Light’. We interpret the location of the Provincial House in the capital of the nation as a God-given exposure demanding great vocational responsibility. We feel indeed like the biblical ‘city on the mountain tip’ called to bear witness to Don Bosco and his spirit in an authentic way.
